timber wolf
Origin: The Timber wolf is found in Canada, Alaska, and the Northern United States in the Rocky Mountains, Western Great Lakes, and the Northeast.
Scientific Name: Cannis Lupis
Type of Wolf: Canadian Timber Wolf – A Timber wolf, like other wolves, is a subspecies of the Grey Wolf.
Habitat: Wolves are found on open prairies, in forests, and in mountainous regions.
Body Traits: Timberwolves are also called Grey Wolves and are the largest wild members of the dog family. Males are bigger than females. They can grow up to 164cm (5.5 feet) long, including the tail and they can weigh from 35kg to over 45kg (70 to over 100 pounds). Timberwolves vary in color from silvery-brown to yellowish-grey. They have white bellies and bushy tails.
Habits: Wolves are territorial and defend the area where they hunt and den. Wolves can run 40 km/h (25 mp/h) for a short distance when chasing prey. But usually, they trot along at 8 km/h (5mp/h) and can cover 16 – 48 km (10 – 30 miles) looking for food. Wolves live in a pack – which is a family group. A family group is composed of one pair of adults and their young, plus young from past years.
Diet: Most of their diet is made up of white-tailed deer (80%). They also eat beavers, moose, fish, muskrats, and rabbits.
Predators: Their only real predator is the man.
Reproduction: Only the lead female (Alpha) in a pack breeds every year. The breeding female is pregnant for 9 weeks (gestation) and has about 6 pups in the Spring in their underground den. By the fall, they are large enough to hunt with the pack.
Lifespan and/or Conservation Status: They can live up to 17 years in the wild. They are listed as vulnerable on the CITES List (International List) and endangered on the U.S. Federal Endangered Species List.
arctic wolf
Origin: They are found throughout the Arctic.
Scientific Name: Cannis Lupis Tundrarum
Type of Wolf: Arctic Wolves, like other wolves, are a subspecies of the Grey Wolf.
Habitat: They live on the rocky, open tundra.
Body Traits: They can reach 152cm (5 feet) long and weigh up to 45 kg (one hundred pounds). They are the largest of the wolves. They have a thick, all-white coat that covers their whole body, including their feet. They have smaller ears, shorter snouts, and legs, and weigh more than Timberwolves. These are all things that help the Arctic wolf survive the cold.
Habits: They don’t make dens. They sleep out in the cold, wrapping their tails to protect their faces. They howl like all wolves, but also whimper, whine, growl, bark, and yip. Researchers think that wolves howl to mark their territory.
Diet: They eat Arctic hares, lemmings, caribou, and young musk oxen (carnivores).
Predators: Their only natural predator is the man.
Reproduction: Females are pregnant for 9 weeks (gestation). She has 6-7 pups in her litter, born in the summer. The male brings food to her while she is still nursing. In a pack, only the top wolves (Alphas) have pups. The whole group will take turns feeding, caring for, and teaching the pups.
Lifespan and Conservation Status: They can live up to 10 years in the wild. They are listed as near threatened on the CITES List (International List) and endangered on the U.S. Federal Endangered Species List.
ahf wolves
Our wolves were rescued from various places from the common trap falls that wolves in South Africa usually face.
Our Wild Pack was on its way to being sold to the Canned Wolf trade. We stepped in and provided them with a haven.
Our other wolves came from the Exotic Animal Trade, where wolves get sold as pets. People do not do the proper research before getting pets and end up surrendering them to sanctuaries. These are and will always stay wild animals at heart.
